Total Singapore EP holders fell by 4,500

Biggest drop in number of foreign workers

Decreasing by 32,000 from last year, the total number of foreign workers working in Singapore showed the greatest drop in the past 15 years.

This is due to the decrease in visa holders mostly in the construction and marine industry, according to the top story on the Straits Times newspaper dated of 16 March.

As for skilled EP (Employment Pass) holders, they have been reduced by 4500 from last year.

The massive decline of EP holders was seen mostly in the professional services and information technology.

In other words, Singaporeans are given jobs to replace the positions the EP holders had released.

As more companies begin to focus on the development of existing local employees' skills, MOM (Ministy Of Manpower) has evaluated stricter foreign recruitment standards.

MOM concluded, "local employment is likely to continue to grow this year, in line with expected economic growth of between 1.5% and 3.5%".
